Life

Watson grew up on a Connecticut farm. After graduating from Yale University in 1847, he pursued various occupations. From 1866 to 1867 he studied chemistry and mineralogy at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University. Then he went to California . He took part in Clarence King's expedition to geological exploration of the 40th parallel. After the expedition botanist William Whitman Bailey (1843-1914) failed due to illness, Watson was given his task; his botanical report was of high quality, although Watson had no study of botany. Asa Gray was so enthusiastic about Watson's work that he brought him to the Gray Herbarium as an assistant , where he was curator from 1874 until the year of his death in 1892 . In 1874 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1889 to the National Academy of Sciences .

After him, the plant genera are Serenoa Hook.f. from the family of the palm trees (Arecaceae) and Watsonamra Kuntze from the family of the red family (Rubiaceae).
