The Horizon Common New Generation Frigate ( CNGF ) is a frigate class of the French and Italian navies . The Italian ships are called Andrea Doria (D 553) and Caio Duilio (D 554) , the French Forbin (D 620) and Chevalier Paul (D 621) . In two navies, they are now regarded as destroyers ( D estroyer classified).
development
After the failure of the NFR-90 project, Great Britain , France and Italy began planning in 1993, but Great Britain withdrew from these plans in 1999 due to differences in industrial policy (see Daring class ). France and Italy continued the project and initially built two ships each. The construction contracts worth 2.8 billion euros went to the joint venture Horizon SAS ( Thales , DCN , Leonardo , Fincantieri ).
The French and Italian destroyers are 90% identical. These are primarily command and air defense ships that act as flagships in a smaller fleet and are supposed to defend them against attacks from the air. They are also designed for anti-naval targeting and for submarine hunting. A lighter, multi-purpose version of these ships, the so-called " FREMM frigates ", is intended to replace various older classes of frigates in the French and Italian navies.
The two Italian ships of the Horizon class replace the two already retired Audace class destroyers . The original plan was to later replace the two De-la-Penne-class destroyers with two more Horizon-class ships. There were similar plans in France. The plans for additional ships of a possibly further developed Horizon class have meanwhile been given up due to financial difficulties in both countries. Instead, one now thinks of an anti-aircraft version of the FREMM frigates.
units
Construction of the first modules of the Forbin and Andrea Doria began in 2002, the keel was laid in 2004, and testing began in 2006. Chevalier Paul and Caio Duilio followed about a year later.
In the list below, “commissioning” means the achievement of full operational capability and integration into active fleet groups. The two Italian ships will operate from Taranto , the French ships from Toulon .
