Lists on the subject |
The MU90 / IMPACT torpedo is a lightweight European U-hunting - Torpedo .
History and Development
The MU90 is a joint development by WASS - Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (Italy), DCN International (France) and THALES (France) and is based on the A244-S torpedo . It is produced by the EuroTorp company and can be used by ships, helicopters and submarines.
In Germany, the MU90 replaced the DM4 and Mk46 Mod. 2 torpedoes . It is used to arm the F123 and F124 class frigates and the Sea Lynx on- board helicopter . Training on the torpedo takes place with the training device for submarine hunting and sonar (AGUS) at the Naval Operations School in Bremerhaven .
As a further development of the MU90, it is planned to use it as an anti-torpedo weapon for surface units against heavy-weight torpedoes in order to destroy them using the hard-kill procedure .
In August 2013, the Australian Navy successfully fired a test shot with the MU90 at a target for the first time.
