The Iver Huitfeldt class is a class of anti-aircraft frigates for the Navy of the Kingdom of Denmark that is derived from the Absalon class . They replaced the ships of the Niels Juel class . The cost per ship was $ 325 million.

history

The construction of the three ships, each displacing 6,645 tons, was approved in 2004 and the Odense Staalskibsværft (Lindø shipyard) commissioned with the construction in December 2006. The design is a derivative of the two 6,300 ton displacement support ships of the Absalon class. However, they lack the vehicle deck, so they have a lower helicopter deck aft. The position of the chimney has also been changed to reduce pollution of the radar by exhaust gases.

The sections have been assigned to the Baltija shipyard in Klaipėda , Lithuania , and its former subsidiary Loksa Shipbuilding, Estonia . Baltija built the lower front, lower rear and keel sections, Loksa built the upper and central hull sections and the superstructures. The sections were transported to Munkebo for assembly . Much of the equipment is provided by Forsvarets Hovedvaerksteder, a subsidiary of the Danish military procurement and logistics organization (Forsvarets Materieltjeneste - FMT).

The type ship Iver Huitfeldt was handed over to the procurement authority FMT on January 21, 2011 and initially extensively tested before it was put into service in 2012. In 2011, apart from the APAR radar, the FMT was responsible for the installations. The two sister ships will receive this when they are commissioned and it will not be retrofitted on the Huitfeldt until 2013 at the earliest.

The Iver Huitfeldt was first deployed to the Horn of Africa in October 2012 . Finally, on March 5, 2015, the ship was the last of the three frigates to be formally handed over to the Navy by the FMT, which brought the procurement program to a close. The Peter Willemoes was the first unit of the class to reach full NATO operational readiness in November 2015.

Based on the design of this class, Babcock UK won the tender for the construction of five "Type 31e" frigates for the British Royal Navy in September 2019 .

The frigates bear the names of famous Danish admirals and are based in Korsør .
