The Absalon-class is a class of frigate-sized command and support vessels in service by the Danish Navy since 2004. The two ships so far were built by Odense Staalskibsværft in Odense . It is named after the bishop and military leader Absalon von Lund .

history

The two ships of the Danish Navy entered service in 2004 and 2005. The weapon systems were only gradually installed until 2008. Only the on-board gun was installed in Odense, while all other systems were installed by the Navy in Korsør itself. Since their commissioning, the ships have mainly been deployed internationally.

technology

The somewhat unusually classified ships of the Absalon class are also referred to as "flexible support ships" or "combat support ships". They are based on a frigate design with a multi-purpose deck that has a loading dock. The ship has a communication system and rooms for a staff of up to 70 people. 130 more people can be accommodated in containers on the multi-purpose deck. The ship can also be used to land and command ground troops. The multi-purpose deck can also be used for laying up to 300 mines or for mine sweeping operations. In addition, the deck can be used as a field hospital or to transport containers , up to 55 vehicles including 7 battle tanks .

The ships can also carry two SRC90E landing craft and two small helicopters.
