Electronic support measures

Electronic support measures ( EloUM ) is the military reconnaissance in the electromagnetic spectrum by recording and evaluating electromagnetic emissions in order to localize their origin, to recognize and ward off an immediate threat, to protect one's own troops and to obtain information relevant to the military situation . In contrast to operational electronic reconnaissance , it takes place on a tactical level . By passing on the determined data and entering it into databases in the reconnaissance network , these can also be used on an operational and strategic level.

In addition to electronic countermeasures and protective measures, electronic support measures are part of the "Electronic Combat" (EK). This is summarized with the telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance (FmElo Aufkl) to the generic term Electronic Warfare (EloKa).

Using highly sensitive receiving devices, suitable measuring methods are used to record, record and automatically evaluate opposing electromagnetic emissions. With the help of a database, electromagnetic emissions are classified and, if possible, assigned to a known enemy weapon system (identification). Recorded data may then be evaluated in detail. Data obtained with electronic support measures can provide information about the type, number, position, movement and direction of movement of the opponent.

Examples

An example of electronic support measures are infrared , laser and radar warning devices in military aircraft, vehicles or on ships that detect electromagnetic emissions from enemy weapon systems, classify and identify them if necessary, warn the crew and possibly trigger countermeasures automatically. This can e.g. B. the ejection of chaff or flares .
