Juel initially entered the Dutch service and did not return to Denmark until 1656 , where he took over the post of Holmadmiral in Copenhagen in 1657 . He was appointed head of a squadron during the war between Denmark and Sweden in 1659 and distinguished himself during the siege of Copenhagen under the command of Obdam and de Ruyters , whom Holland had sent to aid with a fleet .

The peace treaty of 1660 was followed by a new war with Sweden in 1675, in which Juel played a leading role. In 1676 he conquered the island of Gotland with a fleet of 18 ships . Sweden then equipped a mighty fleet with 44 ships of the line . In May 1676, Juel met the enemy after receiving seven more ships, so he could now act at 25. Between Bornholm and Rügen he finally forced the Swedes to withdraw. Thereupon the king appointed him governor of Gotland and sent him another reinforcement of 9 ships. On June 1, the Swedish fleet was defeated again, this time at Öland .

In the following year Juel defeated the Swedish admiral Sjöblad near Warnemünde and on July 1, 1677, fought the memorable sea battle in the Køge Bugt , where the 36 strong Swedish fleet was defeated by the 25 of the Danish.
