Jacob Baron van Wassenaer Obdam (* 1610 in The Hague , Netherlands ; † 13. June 1665 in Lowestoft , UK, England ) was Admiral of Holland and West Friesland and Cavalry - Colonel and Governor of Heusden .

Life

Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam, also known as Admiral Opdam , came from the noble family of Van Wassenaer . He was the son of Admiralty Lieutenant Johan van Duvenvoorde Wassenaer (1574–1623) and Anna Randerode van der Aa (1580–1614). Wassenaer married on April 28, 1633 in Maarssen Agnes Renesse van der Aa (born September 23, 1610 in Utrecht , † October 26, 1661 in 's-Gravenhage ). From this marriage came four daughters and son Jacob Reichsgraf van Wassenaer (1645-1714). Wassenaer was Banneret about Obdam , master of Hensbroek, Spanbroek, Spierdijk, Schoonouwen, Opmeer , Zuidwijk and Kernhem in the Noord-Holland . He was also a member of the Knighthood of Holland and there after 1632 a member of the Council of State. Since 1646 he was a member of the knighthood of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces , the forerunner of today's Netherlands. In 1653 Wassenaer was promoted to lieutenant admiralty. In the first battle of the Second Dutch-English Sea War , Wassenaer commanded the navy of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces on board the ship "Eendracht" . In 1654 there was the so-called act of seclusion , which provided for the exclusion of the Orange from high state offices. The Dutch leadership around Johan de Witt , Cornelis de Graeff , the Army Commander-in-Chief Johann Wolfart van Brederode and Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam urged the States General to stand behind this decree as a whole.

In 1659 he was for his help against the Swedish fleet in the Second Northern War by the Danish King Friedrich III. awarded the Elephant Order .

On June 13, 1665, he fell in the naval battle at Lowestoft when the English fleet sank his ship under the command of the Duke of York and Admiral William Penn .
