Location and economy

Maarssen is 5 km north of Utrecht , on the car and railroad to Amsterdam , on the busy Amsterdam-Rhine Canal ( Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal ) and on the Vecht , which runs right through the old village of Maarssen. On the other side of the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal is the extensive new building district Maarssenbroek , actually a suburb of Utrecht where many commuters from this city live. On the border with the city of Utrecht is the village of Oud Zuylen, with the Zuylen Castle .

Maarssen has a large industrial area, to which Utrecht industrial and trading companies of all kinds have moved between 1900 and 2000. The European service center of the electronics group Fujitsu is located in Maarssen and currently employs around 800 people.

history

In the year 866 a place in this area called Marsua or Marsna (= near moorland or marshland) is mentioned in a deed of donation. Maarssen Castle stood in Maarssen from 1083 until it was devastated by the French in 1672. In the 17th century a settlement of merchants, boatmen and wealthy Amsterdam patricians , like Johan Huydecoper van Maarsseveen , arose in the center of today's village, who had a second home built in the style of their own canal houses. Much of it was lost during the French period (1795–1815). A lot of peat was extracted in the district of Maarsseveen between 1600 and 1800 . Huydecoper was the main investor. There, like in neighboring Loosdrecht , some lakes were created.

The village of Zuilen , which partly belongs to the city of Utrecht and partly (Oud-Zuilen) to Maarssen, was built around Zuylen Castle. The Van Zuylen family was already very influential in the area in the 12th century. The moated castle was destroyed in the 15th century, rebuilt in 1525 and renovated in the Rococo style in 1752 . Here the writer was Belle van Zuylen born (1740-1805), which later under the name of Madame de Charriere in French literature became famous.

Maarssen was from 1938 to 1959 Location of the only Dutch Transporter Bridge , a water crossing (over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal), as it was built only about twenty times worldwide.

Attractions

Zuylen Castle is a moated castle from the 16th to 18th centuries. The last residents, the Barons Van Tuyll van Serooskerken, donated it to the state as a museum around 1952. It is richly decorated and furnished in the style of the 18th century. You can visit the castle with a guide or rent it for weddings and dinner parties.

The Vecht offers a great overview of many country estates in the area. Also on the Vecht is one of eight Sepulchrinian monasteries worldwide, the Emmaus Priory (since 1966) in the Doornburgh estate (an estate from the 17th century). The monastery was closed in April 2017.

In the center of Maarssen there are still several old houses and the Goudestein Castle (local history museum).

The Maarsseveense Plassen are partly a water sports area and partly a bird reserve. They connect to the Loosdrecht Plassen (see under Wijdemeren ).
