As a squadron (from French escadre and Italian squadra , German "Gevierthaufen") are military units in the Navy .

General

In the deep sea fleet of the Imperial Navy and in foreign navies of that time, a squadron was understood to be an association of capital ships, i.e. lines , battleships or cruisers , or a mixed, independent association such as the East Asia Squadron . According to the drill regulations for the fleet of January 12, 1886, an association of two ships was called a squadron. If more than four ships belonged to the squadron, it was divided into divisions of up to four ships. On January 16, 1893, the drill regulations were changed. According to this, a squadron consisted of at least two to four divisions with a total of at least six ships, with a division consisting of at least two and at most four ships. This regulation remained in force until 1914. The service position of the commander of a squadron was called a commodore . This was basically a flag officer , even if the post was held by an officer in the rank of sea captain. The division of the squadrons into two divisions was customary .

Germany

In the German Navy , a squadron based on the Anglo-American system is a combination of several warships of the same type to form a combat unit at regimental or battalion level . Associations composed of different units that are put together for a mission are also commonly referred to as squadrons. Naval Air Wing essentially correspond to the squadrons of the Air Force .

German Navy today

The German Navy today consists of two flotillas and the Naval Aviation Command, each with several squadrons:

The commanders of the ship squadrons ( regimental level ) carry the rank of sea captain as planned , those of the boat squadrons ( battalion level ) the rank of frigate captain .
