The Køge Bugt ( German  Køgebucht ) is an open body of water located in the southwestern Baltic Sea off the east coast of the Danish island of Zealand . The bay extends from the island of Amager in the north to the Stevns peninsula in the south. With a water depth of five to ten meters, it is a rather shallow body of water that only reaches greater depths in the very south at the height of the steep coast of Stevns Klint .

In the center is the port town of Køge , after which the bay is named. From Køge Havn , one of Denmark's oldest harbors , ferries of the shipping company BornholmerFærgen have been crossing the bay in the direction of Rønne on Bornholm since 2004 .

The entire stretch of coast up to Køge is densely populated as one of the “fingers” of the finger plan , according to which growth in the greater Copenhagen area is based. Construction planning has been governed by a municipal comprehensive urban development plan , Køge Bugt-plan , since the 1960s , in the course of which the coastal S-Bahn was built from the capital to Køge. Along the route between Avedøre and Jersie nine new S-Bahn stations were built, around which space was planned for the resettlement of 10–20,000 residents (150,000 in total).

Køge Bugt Beach Park

Between Avedøre Holme ( Hvidovre Kommune ) and Greve Strand ( Greve Kommune ) lies the local recreation area Køge Bugt Strandpark (also Strandparken ), an approximately 5 km² park with an artificial beach and dune landscape, which is 400–500 meters off the coast from 1976–1979 was built into the sea. The backfill of the seven-kilometer stretch of beach was also carried out for reasons of coastal protection for the hinterland. Four marinas have been established in the area: in Brøndby , Vallensbæk , Ishøj and Hundige .

Naval battles

In 1677 the Baltic Bay was the scene of the two-day sea battle in the Køgebucht . In the battle that took place during the Skåne War (1674–1679), the defeated Danish fleet defeated the attackers from Sweden and thus regained naval supremacy . For the Swedish fleet, the costly battle meant one of the most serious defeats in its history. Another naval battle occurred here in 1710 during the Great Northern War , in which the Danish liner Dannebroge was sunk. A memorial column on the Langelinie in Copenhagen today commemorates the officer Ivar Huitfeldt (1665–1710) and his around 500 crew members who lost their lives in the attack. The column is adorned with cannon parts that, like the anchor, were recovered from the wreckage still in the Køge Bugt in 1872–1875.
