Stevns Klint is a steep coast in the southeast of the Danish Baltic Sea island of Zealand . The cliff is about 15 kilometers long and rises up to 41 meters above sea level. In 2014 UNESCO granted the cliff the status of a World Heritage Site .
geology
It is a chalk coast with formations from the Upper Chalk and from the Danium , the lowest level of the Tertiary . In this cliff, the geologically very distinctive Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (extinction of the dinosaurs) near Højerup is visible as a narrow, dark band in the chalk deposits. In Denmark, this tape is also known as "fish clay" or "fish clay" because of its fossil content. Fossils from the cliff are on display in the nearby Stevns Museum.
Access to the beach area under the cliff is next to Højerup Church. The church itself dates from the 12th century. When it was built, it was about 50 meters from the edge of the cliff. Due to the constant erosion of the cliff, the edge of the edge moved closer and closer, until the choir of the church collapsed in 1928. Since then, various coastal protection measures have been designed to prevent further cliff erosion.
Visitor center
In 2015, the Danish government approved the construction of a visitor center in the former Boesdal limestone quarry, which is intended to convey the geological features of the place and to bundle existing tourist offers (e.g. the Stevns Klint Trampesti hiking trail ).
