Cohoni is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Cohoni is the central place of the canton Cohoni in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Palca in the province of Murillo . The village is located at an altitude of 3560  m above the Río de la Paz , which , coming from the capital La Paz , flows past the Illimani in a north-easterly direction towards the Río Beni .

Cohoni lies on a plateau of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central , 8 km southwest of the Illimani. The region's climate is typical of the time of day , with the mean temperature fluctuation during the day being more pronounced than during the year.

The annual average temperature of the region is around 10 ° C (see climate diagram La Paz) and fluctuates between 8 ° C in July and just under 12 ° C in December. Annual precipitation is around 600 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to August and a wet season from December to February.

Transport network

Cohoni is located at a distance of 60 kilometers by road southeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Cohoni a dirt road leads in steep serpentines to the Río de la Paz, past the ruins of stables from the time of the liberation wars ("Caballerizas del Mariscal Andrés de Santa Cruz "), and after fourteen kilometers crosses the river at an altitude of 2390  m at Tahuapalca . The road winds uphill again on the opposite side of the river and reaches the 3782  m high Santiago de Collana after another twenty kilometers. From there, the road continues for 26 kilometers as a high-altitude road to the eastern suburbs of La Paz, overcoming heights of 4300  m .

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high percentage of Aymara population, in the municipality of Palca 94.1 percent of the inhabitants speak the Aymara language ( 2001 ).
