The Cordillera Central is a high mountain range in the eastern Andean highlands of Bolivia .
location
The Cordillera Central ("central mountain range") extends in central Bolivia over 1,200 km in a north-south direction, from Chaupi Orco in the north to Cerro Zapaleri in the south on the border with Chile and Argentina. It separates the Amazon lowlands in the east from the Altiplano plateau in the west and is rich in natural resources. It is divided into the Cordillera Septentrional in the north, the Cordillera Central in the middle and the Cordillera Meridional in the south.
Cordillera Septentrional
The Cordillera Septentrional (Northern Cordillera) (also: Cordillea Real) extends from the Peruvian border north of Lake Titicaca to Oruro on the Uru-Uru Lake :
- Cordillera Apolobamba
- Cordillera Real (Bolivia) (also Cordillera de la Paz )
- Cordillera Muñecas
- Cordillera Quimsa Cruz
- Serranía de Sicasica
The Cordillera Septentrional is often assigned to the Cordillera Oriental rather than the Cordillera Central.
Cordillera Central
The Cordillera Central in the narrower sense comprises two parallel mountain systems between Oruro and Potosí :
Cordillera Meridional
The Cordillera Meridional closes the Altiplano in the south and leads the Cordillera Central mountain range to the Cordillera Occidental in the west :
Valley regions
