The Cordillera de los Frailes is a mountainous region in the central parts of the Bolivian Andes .
The Cordillera de los Frailes is a mountainous region in the northwestern part of the Potosí Department on the border with the Chuquisaca Department . The Cordillera de los Frailes essentially consists of two parts: the western part is a large volcanic field, the formation of which can be dated to the Miocene between 5 and 23 million years ago; the eastern section, the so-called Maragua Syncline, consists of a north-south running chain of sedimentary rocks, the formation of which can be dated to the Paleocene 55 to 65 million years ago or even to the even older Cretaceous period .
The Cordillera de los Frailes extends in the northwest to about Lake Poopó and is bounded to the north by the Challapata - Macha - Ravelo line and to the south by the Río Mulato - Potosí - Betanzos line .
The Cordillera de los Frailes has less high elevations than the Cordillera de Lípez adjoining to the south or the Cordillera Azanaques adjoining to the north . The highest elevations are the Nuevo Mundo (also: Jatun Mundo Khori Huarani ) ( 5438 m ) on the border with the Cordillera de Lípez, and the Jatun Wila Kkollu ( 5214 m ).
Due to its inland location, only a few rivers of supraregional importance have their source in the Cordillera de los Frailes. The most important river of the Cordillera de los Frailes is the Río Pilcomayo , which crosses the region from northwest to southeast.
