Challapata is a small town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Challapata is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Challapata and capital of the province Eduardo Avaroa . The city lies at an altitude of 3732  m on the edge of the 250 km² large alluvial plain of the Río Tacagua on the east bank of Lake Poopó . The Cerro Azanaques rises directly southeast of the city , at 5,102 m one of the highest peaks of the Cordillera Azanaques .

Challapata is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the Azanaques Cordillera, which is part of the Cordillera Central mountain range . The climate of the region is a typical time of day climate , in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than in the course of the seasons.

The annual average temperature of the region is 8 to 9 ° C (see climate diagram Challapata) and fluctuates between 4 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C in December. The annual precipitation is almost 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with 60 to 80 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Challapata is halfway on the road and rail link from Oruro to Potosí , about 130 kilometers from both cities.

The paved road Ruta 1 leads through Challapata, which leads from Desaguadero on the Peruvian border in the north via the cities of El Alto , Oruro, Potosí and Tarija to Bermejo on the Argentine border in the far south.

In Challapata also branches off from the Ruta 1 , the Ruta 30 to Uyuni at the salt lake Salar de Uyuni from which there the Route 5 crosses, in west-east direction from the Chilean border through Potosí and Sucre in the direction of the Bolivian lowlands Metropolis Santa Cruz leads.
