The Municipio Challapata is a district in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Challapata is the northern of the two separate municipalities in the province of Eduardo Avaroa . It is bordered to the northwest by the province of Poopó , to the west by the province of Sud Carangas , to the south by the province of Sebastián Pagador , and to the east and northeast by the Department of Potosí .

The central place of the municipality is the small town of Challapata with 12,684 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the western part of the district.

The municipality of Challapata is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the Cordillera Azanaques , which is part of the Cordillera Central mountain range . The climate of the region is a typical time of day climate , in which the temperature differences during the day are more pronounced than during the year.

The mean average temperature in the valleys of the region is 8–9 ° C (see climate diagram Challapata) and fluctuates between 4 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C in December. The annual precipitation is almost 350 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 15 mm, and significant precipitation only from December to March with 60 to 80 mm monthly precipitation.

The literacy rate among those over 19 is 73 percent, namely 86 percent for men and 60 percent for women ( 2001 ).
