Canton (Bolivia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A canton ( Spanish cantón ) is an administrative unit of the fifth order established in Bolivia by Article 108 of the 1967 constitution, divided into state, department , province and municipality . Since it was not mentioned in the new constitution of 2009, the canton was officially abolished as an administrative level. However, in practice they continue to exist until the respective municipality has given itself an autonomous constitution. In this case, the cantons of the municipality concerned are replaced by districts ( Distrito municipal ).

Each canton was divided into a different number of vicecantons (sub-cantons) on the sixth administrative level. Each Cantón and Vicecantón is headed by a Corregidor (bailiff). The lowest and seventh levels are the individual localidades.
