Michelbeuern is part of the Alsergrund district of Vienna and is now predominantly occupied by the New General Hospital .

history

Michelbeuern around 1830

The name Michelbeuern goes back to the Benedictine Abbey Michaelbeuern near Salzburg . Already in the restitution letter in the context of the consecration of the monastery in 1072, the possessions are mentioned, which are called 'Hof zu Waring'. These extended over a large part of today's district of Währing and included vineyards, meadows and forests.

With the construction of the line wall in 1704 (along the course of the Vienna Belt ), the actual Michelbeuern'sche Grund, located inwards, was separated from Währing and incorporated into Alservorstadt . In addition to the line wall, the Alserbach in the south and east and the Währinger Bach in the north marked the boundaries of the area.

In the Josephinian era (1786) the ownership of the monastery was assigned to the Vienna magistrate for 10,000 guilders .

Up until the middle of the 19th century there was little development. The Brünnlbad and the Brünnlmühle were located on Alserbach in the south (today's Lazarettgasse) . In the north which is kk Verzehrungssteuer- line Official Waehring at the site of the present Volksopera emphasized, while in the central part brick pits were created and stoves. Topographical names in this area were 'Auf der Sichenals' and 'Im Oberen und Unteren Gottlosbergen' (also known as Gotzlosberg).

In 1836 the kk privileged Dampfmaschinenfabriks AG ( Sigl'sche Maschinenfabrik , later Technologisches Gewerbemuseum and today the Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus WUK or HLMW9 Michelbeuern ) was founded in Eisengasse (today Wilhelm-Exner-Gasse). Finally, Ferdinand Fellner built the Lower Austrian insane asylum on a hill in the area from 1848-1853 , which was later continued as a psychiatric-neurological university clinic. The building lasted until 1974 when it was demolished as part of the construction of the New General Hospital.

In the 1890s, Michelbeuern also received a station of the same name on the belt line of the Vienna steam city railway , which, however, only served as a freight station with an attached market hall . It was not until the Viennese electric light rail system received a passenger stop there in 1987; today the station is maintained by the U6 line of the Vienna subway .
