The Alservorstadt is a district of Vienna , in the townships Alsergrund and Josefstadt . The place was an independent municipality until 1850.

Alservorstadt is located in the south of the 9th district of Alsergrund and in the northeast of the 8th district of Josefstadt. The Alserstraße forms the county line.

The river Als is the namesake of the district and now flows as an underground brook channel through the Alservorstadt. In the north the Alservorstadt borders on the Thurygrund , in the east on the Roßau , in the south on the inner city , the Josefstadt and Breitenfeld and in the west on Währing and Michelbeuern .

After the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, the Alservorstadt developed along today's Alser Strasse in an area that was previously only sparsely populated. End of the 17th century, the first at were Spittelberg living Croats , Slovaks and Slovenes forced the so-called Krowotendörfl north to settle Alserstraße. (In the middle of the 19th century, many residents moved to Favoriten due to rising land prices ). The Alser barracks was opened in 1753 and demolished in 1912. The Alservorstadt had at today's address 8. , Laudongasse 5, a two-story, baroque parish house that was used as such from 1821–1862 , at which the former house number 46 can be read. In 1850, the Alservorstadt was incorporated into Vienna as part of the Alsergrund district. In 1862 the part south of Alser Strasse was separated and added to the smaller district of Josefstadt.

Votive Church

One of the most famous sights of Alservorstadt is the neo-Gothic votive church , which was built from 1856 to 1879 according to plans by Heinrich von Ferstel . The classical building of the medical-surgical academy Josephinum by the architect Isidore Canevale dates from the 18th century. Opposite is the Palais Clam-Gallas . Only the front facade of the Schwarzspanierkirche has been preserved.

Also known is the Strudlhofstiege , which was set as a literary monument with the novel Die Strudlhofstiege or Melzer and the depths of the years by Heimito von Doderer . The Vigilance Fountain is on Schlesingerplatz, and the Schubert Fountain on the border with Thurygrund and Roßau . In Palais Schönborn is Austrian Folklore Museum housed and Narrenturm the Pathological-Anatomical Museum Vienna. The Arne-Karlsson-Park and the Schönbornpark are among the larger parks in the district . The Embassy of the United States in Vienna is also located in Alservorstadt .

Economy and Infrastructure

Located between the Alser Straße underground station on the Gürtel and the Schottentor underground station on the Ringstraße , Alservorstadt is well connected to public transport. In the district are the headquarters of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and the Josefstadt prison, as well as the municipal district office for the 8th district. Although the General Hospital (AKH) is now in Michelbeuern, there are still larger health facilities in Alservorstadt, such as the St. Anna Children's Hospital . In addition to the campus of the University of Vienna , which is located on the grounds of the Old General Hospital , there are other important educational institutions in Alservorstadt, including the Lycée Français de Vienne and the Afro-Asiatic Institute for development policy . The former main municipal library Haus des Buch , which was built in place of the Vienna City Theater , now serves as the headquarters of the city of Vienna's music schools.
