The new Scottish cemetery was a cemetery in the Sensengasse (formerly dead alley ) in the Alservorstadt in today's 9th Viennese district of Alsergrund . It was documented from 1765 to 1784.

history

Traditionally, numerous hospitals existed in the area of the New Schottenfriedhof. Due to the high mortality, several cemeteries were established in the immediate vicinity. In addition to the New Schottenfriedhof, there was also a cemetery for the Spanish Hospital in Boltzmanngasse , a cemetery for the Armensiechhaus ( Bäckenhäusel ) and a cemetery in the area of today's Arne-Karlsson-Park , which was used by a military hospital for a long time. In 1784, as part of the Josephine reforms, all cemeteries within the Vienna belt were closed and abandoned. In their place a botanical garden was created for the Josephinum , in which numerous alpine plants, all medicinal and poisonous plants growing in Austria as well as the most important foreign medicinal and useful plants were grown.

In 2006, during construction work for an underground car park in the area of Sensengasse 1–3, at least 400 shaft graves and the vault of a small church were discovered. The bones are to be recorded and buried again in the Vienna Central Cemetery .
