The Spanish Hospital was an early hospital founded in 1717 in today's Boltzmanngasse 9–9a in the 9th district of Alsergrund in Vienna . The building that now houses the Vienna seminary has been a listed building since April 1, 2003 ( list entry ). Currently

On December 28, 1717, Stephan Mascaro, Mauritius Andreu, Gabriel Joly Orso and Nicolaus Sardagna took over the purchase contract for a property with a building. After this, which had already been used as a hospital during a plague epidemic in 1713, was demolished, construction began on February 12, 1718.

As commissioner of the Spanish Hospital, Don Josepho Pascasio Taffaelo acquired a neighboring property on November 13, 1725 in order to be able to expand the hospital. In 1754 the Dreifaltigkeitsspital on Rennweg was abandoned and moved here to make room for the Kaiser or Hofspital , which was moved to Rennweg. At the same time as this relocation, the medical and practical training school previously located at the Bürgerspital was relocated to the Spanish hospital on the advice of Gerard van Swieten . De Anton de Haen was called to Vienna as a teacher . In 1769 the Strudelhof was bought at auction and used as a hospital for people with contagious diseases. Between 1764 and 1784, the clerk's hospital was housed here in some rooms .

After the opening of the General Hospital under Emperor Joseph II in 1784, the patients were transferred from the Spanish Hospital to the new central hospital. The foundling center in Vienna then moved here for four years. In addition to Anton de Haen, Leopold von Auenbrugger was another prominent doctor who worked here. In 1780 the hospital accommodated 70 patients, whose treatment costs were covered by foundations, and around 290 paying patients. From the surplus of the income generated by the foundations and possessions, the Spanish Hospital had to deliver 6,000 guilders a year for the maintenance of the Breitenfurt hospital and a further 3,150 guilders for the medical-practical training school.

The foundation stone for the hospital church and today's seminary church, which was built by Anton Ospel , took place on August 2, 1722 by Emperor Charles VI. instead, the church consecration on September 24, 1723. It was consecrated by the first Vienna Archbishop Sigismund Graf Kollonitsch in honor of Santa Maria de Mercede (Mary of Mercy).

The rectangular hall church with rich stucco decoration on the ceiling has two altar niches on both sides. The two-tower church facade was originally in the high baroque style, but was redesigned in the classical style in 1821 . The organ comes from the Georg Hradetzky workshop and was installed in 1970.

The altarpiece of the first side altar on the Gospel side was painted by Carlo Carlone ("St. Borromeo", around 1727), that of the second Francois Roettier ("Christ and Peter on the Sea of ​​Galilee", 1727). The altarpiece ("St. Januarius", 1725) on the first side altar on the epistle side was made by Martino Altomonte .

In the crypt there are seven coffins, including that of the Redemptorist Father Franz Tandler (1820–1902), who worked for 45 years as a youth pastor in the church and in 1857 founded the first Catholic youth association, which is the parent association of the Austrian Catholic youth movement .
