History and equipment

The house at Seegasse 16, in which the chapel is located

The house at Seegasse No. 16 , in which the Messias Chapel is located, was acquired by the Swedish Israel Mission in March 1922 . This house was built by the Jewish architect Ludwig Schmidl . A girls' support association had it built as a school for poor Jewish girls. A cross on the left and a small plaque on the right in the church remind of history, for example the time of the war years, when the Swedish Israel Mission helped persecuted Jews to leave the country.

Since 1951, when Adolf Rücker became pastor of the Evangelical Community of Vienna - Inner City (City Church) , the evangelical preaching station for the 9th district of Vienna was expanded in the house of the Swedish Mission .

After the Swedish Mission ended its work in Vienna, the building was purchased by the Vienna - Innere Stadt community and the Messias Chapel became an independent evangelical preaching station from 1961. In 1964 the chapel was completely modernized, of the old furnishings only the altarpiece Emmausjünger is in the church. It is a copy by E. Hüttenbrenner based on an original from an unknown hand from the 17th century (owned by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna). Today's equipment is the simplest church modern .

On January 28, 1999, the independent evangelical congregation Vienna Alsergrund - "Messiaskapelle" was founded. Your parish is still the 9th district. This makes it the 22nd parish of the Vienna Superintendent.

The congregation regularly takes part in the Long Night of the Churches . The choir of the Bach Community of Vienna also rehearses here .
