Eberhard von Stettenberg , sometimes also Stetenberg and incorrectly Sternberg (* around 1375 ; † 23 February 1443 ), was canon in Worms and Speyer , as well as elected prince-bishop of Worms in 1426 .

origin

He came from the low-nobility, Franconian family von Stettenberg , whose ancestral seat was the Stettenburg near Obervolkach and which later sat in Gamburg an der Tauber . She was in the service of the Würzburg Monastery .

Live and act

As early as 1402, Eberhard von Stettenberg owned canons in the Speyer and Worms cathedral monasteries. On June 5, 1404, he matriculated to study at the University of Heidelberg . From 1419 he was provost (head) of the St. German monastery in Speyer , later also in the rank of archdeacon .

On May 18, 1426, Prince-Bishop of Worms, Johannes von Fleckenstein, died and on May 29 of that year Eberhard von Stettenberg was elected as his successor. After just a few days, on June 6th, the bishops' elections gave up because of great resistance against them. This was probably related to his social origin from a servant family and to the fact that his family was alien to the local aristocratic circles, especially the powerful Electoral Palatinate . On June 12th, the Electoral Palatinate Councilor Friedrich von Domneck was elected as his successor as Bishop of Worms.

Stettenberg retained his other offices, and in 1428 he also became cathedral scholaster in Speyer. He was a close confidante of the Speyer bishop Raban von Helmstatt . On April 20, 1439, Eberhard von Stettenberg is referred to as the oldest Speyer Cathedral Chapter when he took part in the entry of the new Bishop Reinhard von Helmstatt . Together with the cathedral dean Nikolaus Burgmann he received the shepherd on the steps of the Speyer Cathedral and led him inside under a canopy .

Eberhard von Stettenberg died on February 23, 1443 and is registered on this day with a memorial for the year in the younger Seelbuch of the Speyer Cathedral .
