Soon afterwards he began an internship in the Bavarian General Reich Archives, today the Bavarian Main State Archives . As a scholarship holder of the Görres Society , Franz Xaver Glasschröder went to Rome in 1889 for a six-month study visit , where he also worked in the Vatican Archives .

After his return, Glasschröder passed the archivist exam and in 1891 took up the post of secretary of the Speyer district archive . Here he supported his mentor, the archive director Johannes Mayerhofer, with the inspection, organization and indexing of the stored documents. It was about 10,000 documents from the Speyer cathedral monastery , the Worms cathedral monastery, as well as the surrounding collegiate monasteries and monasteries. After Mayerhofer's death in 1900, his colleague took over the post of director in Speyer and continued the task. As a result of this work and after further research in external archives, Franz Xaver Glasschröder's first major publication, Documents on Palatinate Church History in the Middle Ages (1903), has remained a standard work on Palatinate history to this day. In 1930 he published the supplementary volume New Documents on Palatinate Church History in the Middle Ages .

As early as 1902, before the Speyer district archive moved to its new domicile near the cathedral (today the central archive of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate ), Glasschröder received a call to Munich. He went back to the Bavarian Reich Archives in Munich as an assessor. Here he led the Palatinate historical section, the Department of Bavarian Adelsmatrikel that Siegel Cabinet and the Herold registry . In 1904 he was promoted to archivist , in 1917 to secret archivist and in 1921 to director of all Bavarian state archives.

Glasschröder began by Bishop Konrad von Busch and, after his death in 1910, was only available in fragments, choir rules and younger sea book of the old Speier cathedral chapter . It contains all the historical measuring foundations of the Speyer cathedral and a wealth of biographical information on the personalities mentioned there. This book was the prelude to the series of publications of the Historisches Museum der Pfalz , the Historisches Verein der Pfalz .

In addition, there was a large number of smaller publications and specialist articles. Franz Xaver Glasschröder was popular because of his historical commitment and willingness to help.
