Geiersthal is a municipality and a village in the Lower Bavarian district of Regen and a state-approved resort .

Geographical location
The community is located in the Danube Forest region in the middle of the Bavarian Forest above the Black Rain Valley, around eight kilometers southeast of Viechtach , 22 km north of Deggendorf , 13 km northwest of the district town of Regen and nine kilometers from Bodenmais . From a geographical point of view, the northern part of the municipality belongs to the Rear Bavarian Forest and the southern part to the so-called rain depression . The highest point in the municipality is the Frankenberg near Frankenried at 748 m above sea level. NN. The places Geiersthal , Kammersdorf and Teisnach have almost completely grown together.
Direct neighboring communities are Drachselsried in the north, Böbrach in the northeast, Teisnach in the east, Patersdorf in the south, Kollnburg in the south-west and Viechtach in the north-west.

history
Until the church is planted
The first verifiable mention of the place comes from the year 1209. In the parish register of the diocese of Regensburg from the year 1286 the parish of Geiersthal is also mentioned. The mother parish counted in 1300, including Geiersthal 13 places that grew to 50 villages by the middle of the 18th century.
Geiersthal belonged to the Straubing Rent Office and the Viechtach Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria . In the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
19th and 20th centuries
The lawyer Friedrich Freiherr von Wulffen (1790–1858) comes from Geiersthal . From 1843 to 1846 he was district president of Lower Bavaria and was a member of the right-wing center of the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848/49. From 1855 he was president of the highest court in Bavaria, the Higher Appeal Court in Munich.
Negotiations had been going on since 1886 to move the parish seat from Geiersthal to Teisnach, which had become the most important place in the parish since the Teisnach paper mill was founded in 1881. Finally, a new parish church was built in Teisnach, while the nave of the dilapidated Geiersthal parish church was demolished under police protection. The remaining apse was converted into a cemetery chapel. In 1903 the parish seat was relocated to Teisnach.

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 2,079 to 2,238 by 159 inhabitants or 7.7%.

The municipal council consists of the first mayor and 14 members. Since May 1, 2020, the members have been distributed as follows:

- SPD / Free Citizens: 3 seats (22.79% of the vote)
- Free community of voters: 5 seats (24.40% of the votes)
- Citizens' list: 2 seats (10.93% of the vote)

Road traffic
The most important road connection in the municipality is the B 85 , which leads through the Linden district. This leads from Passau via the district town of Regen in the direction of Cham. The B 11 to Deggendorf branches off from this near Patersdorf not far from the municipal boundary .
The two largest districts Geiersthal and Kammersdorf are connected to the federal highways via the regional road REG 19 and the state roads 2136 and 2636. These two state roads also connect the community with the neighboring towns of Bodenmais, Drachselsried, Patersdorf and Teisnach.
Rail transport
The Gotteszell – Viechtach railway line of the Länderbahn runs across the municipality . Between 1991 and 2016 this was only used in special traffic. The bus stops Teisnach Rohde & Schwarz (Berging district), Böbrach , Gumpenried-Asbach and Nußberg-Schönau are located in the municipality . However, these are remote in the rain valley. The closest train station to the main town is Teisnach . As part of the rail test operation that began on September 8, 2016, regular passenger trains will again stop at the stops.
The otherwise closest regularly served train station with connections along the Plattling – Bayerisch Eisenstein railway line by Waldbahn trains is in Gotteszell, twelve kilometers away .
