history

Until the 19th century

On behalf of the Bishop of Passau, monks from the Niederalteich monastery cleared the impassable "Nortwald" centuries ago to make it arable. The form of clearing at that time was called "maizzen". From this connection the name "Bischofsmais" arose over time. The place appeared for the first time in 1136 under Perthold von Piscolfesmaez in a document.

The place was on a mule track, the Böhmweg , and wandering merchants and traders, the so-called “mule”, used it to exchange skins, grain and above all salt between Bavaria and Bohemia. The Böhmweg led from Deggendorf via the current district of Greising, Bischofsmais and Zwiesel to Prague and is now one of the most beautiful hiking trails.

Around 1322 the Heidelberg monk Hermann built a hermitage near Bischofsmais in order to lead a strict life of renunciation, penance and contemplation. After his death, thousands made pilgrimages to Sankt Hermann in the 18th century , which in turn promoted the development of Bischofsmais. In addition to the construction of a school and an inn, the church at that time was also renovated in the early rococo style before a fire destroyed the village and the church on August 9, 1864. Only the rectory and two houses remained.

20th and 21st centuries

The most prominent citizen of Bischofsmais was Professor Joseph Freundorfer , who was appointed Bishop of Augsburg in 1949. His birthplace, near the church, was also the residence of the local writer Max Peinkofer for many years .

In 1956 the Berlin factory owner Otto Müller opened with his wife Lina nee. Trauner the Hotel Wastlsäge with 100 beds on the site of a former sawmill. This was the first time that the tourist offer in the Bavarian Forest was expanded to include the upscale category. 1973 brought the renovation to a 120-bed hotel, later it was expanded to 180 beds. In 1973 a holiday park was opened on a 120,000 m² site with 354 apartments and 1018 beds.

Today Bischofsmais is a family-friendly resort that offers not only good air and sights, but also a variety of leisure and sports opportunities.
