history

Konrad der Nussberger (bust at the old town hall in Viechtach)

Until the 18th century

Vidaha is mentioned for the first time in 1104 when the Count von Bogen Friedrich III. the monastery Oberalteich here farmland transferred. In 1242 the property came to the Wittelsbachers , who set up a ducal foster court for the Vichtreich here. Viechtach was granted market rights at the end of the 13th century .

The Degenbergs and the Nussbergers usually ruled Viechtach as carers . In 1350 Konrad Nußberger von Nußberg donated a Seelhaus and a hospital in Viechtach, and in the confirmation letter from Duke Albrecht in 1360, Viechtach is already mentioned as a market.

Viechtach was a nursing office until 1800 and belonged to the Straubing Rent Office of the Electorate of Bavaria. It had a market court with extensive magistrate rights. In addition, there was an open Hofmark here in civil hands.

In the 17th century, the economic situation of this place gave rise to the "Viechtach model" to finance the income from the market. Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria could not prevent wheat beer brewing in Viechtach, as this was "old tradition". Since he strove to monopolize wheat beer brewing, he allowed the citizens to boil wheat beer against delivery of half the proceeds to the ducal treasury. This model of financing was later adopted for other locations as well, e.g. B. after a city fire.

Viechtach was ravaged by the Böckler War , the Lion War , where it sided with the Duke, the Thirty Years War , the War of the Spanish Succession and the War of the Austrian Succession . Fires raged in 1474, 1658, 1698 and 1729, the latter of which destroyed the parish church. The rococo church that still exists today was built between 1757 and 1765.

Despite these setbacks, weaving established itself in Viechtach, and successful family businesses emerged from the 18th century.

19th century

In the 19th century, the linen trade of the Schmaus & Co. company flourished, whose linen was obtained from all Bavarian garrisons . The Kilger brothers leather factory was founded in Viechtach in 1856. In addition, the yarn, lard and cattle trade formed the economic basis of the market.

The moral festival, which has been celebrated annually since May 1, 1828, formed a special tradition, with a young man and a virgin who had distinguished themselves through particular exemplary character were rewarded with a prize. The foundation that supported this event was dissolved by the city council after the Second World War because of the devaluation of money.

20th century

The Gotteszell – Viechtach railway line was opened in 1891 and extended to Blaibach in 1928 . Under the direction of the mayor and pharmacist Karl Gareis, the Doctor Eisenbarth Festival, written by Gareis, was performed for the first time in 1935. This festival in honor of Doctor Eisenbarth was very successful until the outbreak of the Second World War. The market escaped destruction by the US Army at the end of World War II by surrendering without a fight.

In 1953 the market was elevated to a town. In 1958 the Doktor Eisenbarth Festival was repeated, but in the same year documents in the episcopal archive in Regensburg proved that Doctor Eisenbarth came from Oberviechtach and not from Viechtach.

21st century

A Doctor Eisenbarth game was performed in 2004 as part of the 900th anniversary of Viechtach. In the summer of 2014 there were further performances of this play by the Burgfestspielverein.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1971, the previously independent communities of Blossersberg and Schlatzendorf were incorporated. On May 1, 1978, part of the dissolved community of Wettzell was added.

coat of arms

Blazon : In gold, a green spruce with a brown trunk with strong roots.

The coat of arms was granted to the market in 1437 in a letter of arms by Duke Ernst of Bavaria-Munich . Due to the lack of a coat of arms in the letter, the first photo proof goes back to the oldest seal known in the print since 1514 with the spruce coat of arms in the semicircular shield. All seals of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries show the spruce with pronounced roots. In 1721 the spruce got a green lawn. In the 19th century, probably to distinguish it from the coat of arms of Oberviechtach (“In silver on a grassed shield base, a green spruce.”), A shield head roughened with silver and blue (Bavarian Wecken ) was added at times, later golden cones. In the 20th century, the spruce had contact with the edge of the shield base ("A strongly rooted green spruce with six golden cones growing out of the shield base in gold."). Since April 2000, the city coat of arms has had its original shape again without turf and cones after a design by the artist Reinhard Schmid on behalf of the city of Viechtach.
