Wettzell is a district of Bad Kötzting in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham . Until 1978 it formed an independent municipality.

location

Wettzell is located in the Bavarian Forest , four kilometers southeast of Bad Kötzting at about 600  m above sea level. NHN . In the northeast there is a long ridge with Kaitersberg ( 1040  m above sea level ) and Großem Riedelstein ( 1132  m above sea level ), in the south the valley of the black rain with the Höllenstein reservoir . The local area covers about three square kilometers and is surrounded by another ten small towns. To the west is the geodetic observatory Wettzell .

history

The community of Wettzell belonged to the Lower Bavarian district of Viechtach . It consisted of the districts Fischerhof , Kaitersbach , Kastlmühle , Leckern , Nebenweg , Poppenzell , Stockmühle , Trum and Wettzell. On January 1, 1946, the previously independent municipality of Sackenried was incorporated with the five districts of Sackenried, Buchberg , Hainzlhof , Höllnstein and Ried .

On April 1, 1972, Wettzell merged with the municipalities of Schönau (21 districts) and Wiesing (13 districts) to form the unitary municipality of Wettzell, which was divided on May 1, 1978 between the two cities of Kötzting and Viechtach .

The former district of Trum is structurally connected to Wettzell and was last mentioned in 1950 in the official register of places. It only exists as a street name.

Attractions

The parish church of St. Laurentius dates back to a Romanesque building from 1209 and was expanded to include the Gothic apse around 1500 . The main nave was redesigned in 1848.

Asteroid (38270) Wettzell

A minor planet in the asteroid belt discovered in 1999 at the Starkenburg observatory in Heppenheim. Because of its connection to the geodetic observatory, the explorers called it " (38270) Wettzell ". With an estimated mean diameter of around four kilometers, it is larger than the village of Wettzell. A beer table in a brewery along the Bad Kötzting - Wettzell Planet Trail is dedicated to the asteroid.
