The Große Riedelstein forms with its height of 1132.9  m above sea level. NHN the highest point of the Kaitersberg in the Bavarian Forest . The stone monument in honor of the poet Maximilian Schmidt called Waldschmidt adorns its rocky summit .

In summer the Große Riedelstein is a popular hiking mountain with a beautiful panorama on all sides, in winter a ski lift leads from the Ecker Sattel to below the summit. Some hiking trails lead to the summit, including from Thalersdorf , Arnbruck and Arrach . In addition, the long-distance hiking trail E6 passes the Großer Riedelstein on its route from Bad Kötzting to Großer Arber .

Not far from the summit there is an important climbing area on the so-called smoke tubes . In the south is the Kleine Riedelstein (1042 m).

The summit is designated as a geotope and consists of a steep rock cliff made up of typical metatectic (partially melted) gneiss. Characteristic is the fibrous banding with light areas made of quartz and feldspar, which have already been mobilized, and the dark, non-melted areas made of biotite, cordierite and sillimanite.
