history

Weissenregen pilgrimage, engraving around 1860

In 1049, Emperor Heinrich III. the estate "Wiezzenregen" the monastery Niederaltaich and confirmed him in 1050 freedom over Weißenregen. The surrounding area came into the possession of the Wittelsbach family in 1204 . In 1429 it fell to the partial duchy of Bavaria-Munich .

The area was devastated several times during the Hussite Wars . Regarding the origin of the pilgrimage, a legend tells of an image of grace saved from the iconoclasm in Nabburg , which was initially hung on an oak.

In 1584 the oak burned down, but the miraculous image remained intact and was placed in a wayside shrine. In 1593 the Niederaltaich monastery built a chapel in Weißenregen, which was replaced by a larger one in 1611. Finally, instead of the dilapidated chapel, the current pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary was built from 1750 to 1765 . The altars and pulpit were created by the Kötzting sculptor Johann Paulus Hager. The church is particularly known for its original ship's pulpit. From the town of Kötzting a crossroad leads to the pilgrimage church.

The Weißenregen volunteer fire department was founded in 1894. The Heimatverein of the former community of Weißenregen, founded in 1995, publishes annual books on the history of Weißenregen.

On October 1, 1971, the previously independent community was incorporated into the town of Kötzting.
