history

Helmut Wagner founded the company in Rehau (Bavaria) in 1948 . On December 28, 1948, the District Office of Hof (Saale) issued the medical student Helmut Wagner with the official "permit to set up a small-scale industrial enterprise for the production of Igelite". With this approval in his hands, the then 23-year-old son of the school board broke off his studies to produce plastic piping and water hoses. The nucleus is extrusion (process engineering) . The first production facility is an outbuilding of the Franconian leather factory founded in Rehau in 1907. According to the entry in the commercial register, the young company was financially supported by its mother Christina Wagner and the factory owner's daughter Elsa Linhardt. The company's ascent begins as a supplier for the production of the VW Beetle . Running boards for cars and straps for drivers and passengers in VW Beetles were produced.

In 1949 Wagner named his work Rehau Plastiks.

In this early phase, part of the machine and system technology is developed and built in a separate machine technology department. In the course of product development, other processes such as injection molding or extrusion blow molding come into play alongside extrusion .

Soon, new areas of application for plastic products (e.g. furniture profiles, hoses for industrial applications and for medical technology) will be opened up, sophisticated technical parts and systems will be developed and plastic granulates will be produced by defining the recipe and using compounding . The Rehau Group's material types therefore have the prefix RAU. In line with the new development of technical polymers in the raw materials industry, the range of plastic types used in the Rehau Group has been continuously expanded.

In addition to two plants in Rehau, the first plant for the production of parts for the automotive industry, including the production of bumpers , was built in Feuchtwangen in 1951 . Today Feuchtwangen is the group’s largest production site in Germany with two factories. 1958 The first plastic window profile and the first magnetic tape frame for refrigerators are extruded.

In 1962 the first plant outside of Europe was opened in Montreal (Canada). At the beginning of the 1960s, the headquarters of Rehau Plastik was relocated to Muri near Bern in Switzerland and the group’s global purchasing for 45 plants in 21 countries and controlling were bundled there. The holding company in Muri has almost 100 employees.

On the initiative of Rehau, the plastics molding profession was introduced in Germany in 1976 . In the 1970s, plastic parts experience a rapidly increasing demand, which the Rehau Group supports in the areas of automotive, furniture and electrical industry, window, sanitary, heating and building technology, pipe and hose applications. In addition to the administration in Rehau, a new administration is being built in Erlangen-Eltersdorf.

In 2000, Helmut Wagner handed over the management of the supervisory board to his sons Jobst Wagner and Veit Wagner. Jobst Wagner became President of the Supervisory Board and Veit Wagner became Vice President. The two brothers share the tasks in the company. Veit Wagner takes care of the automotive sector , looks after the English-speaking market with branches in North America, Great Britain (island) and South Africa . Jobst Wagner is responsible for the areas of construction and industry, as well as all other branches worldwide.

In 2004, the medical division with around 200 employees was spun off and founded as a sister company, Raumedic AG. Raumedic AG is a development partner and manufacturer for the medical and pharmaceutical industries with an independent sales network and two production sites for extrusion, injection molding and assembly in clean rooms in Helmbrechts and Mills River (North Carolina, USA).

In 2018, the Supervisory Board of the globally active Rehau Group announced that William Christensen has been appointed as the new CEO and Kurt Plattner as the new CFO of REHAU.

In 2018, the globally operating MB Barter & Trading SA (MBT) was taken over by REHAU Verwaltungszentrale AG to found a leading provider of polymer-based solutions. The combination of the integrated REHAU know-how of materials, processes and applications in connection with the relevant trading and distribution competence of MBT resulted in a link between complementary core competencies in technological polymer solutions.

Also in 2018, REHAU Verwaltungszentrale AG, based in Muri near Bern, took over the internationally active MB Barter Trading AG from Zug / Steinhausen with its 30 locations worldwide. Together with the REHAU purchasing center, which is also based in Muri near Bern as an independent company, the company MERAXIS , which was renamed in 2019, has a volume of over 2 billion euros, making it one of the leading retailers and distributors of plastics. The merger of the two traditional family businesses is intended to generate added value through new services, sustainable growth and innovations. The combination of REHAU's know-how of materials, processes and applications in connection with the global trading, logistics and distribution competence of MB Barter Trading opens up strategic opportunities for new business models.

With effect from May 13, 2019, Uwe H. Böhlke joined REHAU as Chief Operations Officer.

Shareholder structure

The Rehau Group is run as an AG + Co. All of the company's shares were distributed among founding and family members.

The two sons of Helmut Wagner, Jobst and Veit, as representatives of the second generation, have eleven children who will soon be joining the company as the third generation or will be involved in it. Helmut Wagner's oldest grandson is Nils Wagner, the son of Jobst Wagner. The descendants and heirs of the founding shareholder Elsa Linhardt left the company after 2000 in exchange for cash compensation in the higher three-digit million range.

The business magazine Bilanz estimates the wealth of the Wagner family in the list of the 300 richest in Switzerland at 800 to 900 million francs.

Corporate strategy and philosophy

Compared to the company founder, autodidact and inventor Helmut Wagner, the second generation has structurally changed, expanded and made the company more transparent. A clear matrix structure of the complex organization and the transfer of responsibility to regional managing directors were among the changes that began in 2000.

The special features and key points of the Rehau Group still include:

  • high complexity of the group with numerous production locations, application areas and markets, which make the company as a whole relatively independent of market or branch fluctuations due to the spectrum
  • Trend in the development from a manufacturer of semi-finished products to a system and development partner
  • Influence on the raw materials side: Due to the high procurement volume from the raw materials industry, price advantages, with simultaneous in-house formulation of plastic types for quality assurance and increasing added value
  • high synergies in purchasing, sales and product development
  • No name and own brands: In some sectors, branded products are offered in multi-level sales, in automotive or medical technology, for example, the products are labeled by customers
  • strong commitment in pioneer markets such as Eastern Europe, South America, Africa or Asia
  • Legal form as AG + Co., in which all shares are held by the family without a stock exchange listing
  • Restriction of employee participation by excluding trade union activities.

Strategically, products and systems are promoted under the aspects of sustainability or resource conservation as an expression of customer demand. In the construction sector, the use of geothermal energy and low-energy houses are among the activities of the Rehau Group.

Rehau Austria

Rehau has plants in Austria in

  • Graz - Automotive; Development cooperation with MAGNA and other vehicle manufacturers as well as suppliers for bumpers and side skirts
  • Guntramsdorf - products for construction, windows, furniture and industry
  • Linz - detto
  • Neulengbach - microducts; On January 13, 2020, it was declared that due to increasing cost pressure and declining sales in the DACH area, production in Neulengbach will be closed until the end of 2021 and will be relocated to Eastern Europe.

Micro cable pipes are typically made of HD PE extruded , are translucent, wear color markings in the form of longitudinal stripes and prints as the running length meters. The semi-rigid tubes are manufactured with outside diameters of 7–20 mm , wall thicknesses of 0.75–2.5 mm and internal dimensions of 4–16 mm and are delivered as coils on large cable drums. They are mainly used as a guide for fiber optic but also copper cables laid in the ground and in buildings. As a guide they remain in function for a very long time, while cables are sometimes replaced by more powerful, more modern ones within 10 years.

Cables can be pushed in a short distance or drawn in longer distances. The most efficient way to work is blowing in with compressed air, combined with a feed through electrically or pneumatically driven rollers. As a standard, route lengths of 1.5 km, especially straight along railway lines, of 2 km are achieved. In order to reduce the friction of the cable along the wall, pipes are typically made with 20-60 longitudinal grooves. In cross-section, they show a zig-zag contour on the inside, the inward-pointing prongs of which are usually rounded or flattened, depending on the manufacturer. These grooves also help to keep the air flow laminar when blowing in.

Microducts can be laid individually, in groups or as a group of pipes with a sheath, or they can be blown into a protective pipe. Protective tubes can be coated on the inside with a lubricant and / or have longitudinal grooves. A flushing hole can penetrate a certain distance of the ground in order to lay a protective pipe or a micro duct assembly.

criticism

The company has repeatedly been criticized in the press for preventing the formation of works councils and other union activities contrary to valid court orders.
