Georg Hofmann (born January 28, 1895 in Kirchenbuch / Burglengenfeld , † November 14, 1966 in Schönau near Viechtach ) was a German Catholic clergyman and local researcher. For almost forty years he worked as an expositus in Schönau . He also worked as a district home nurse for the Viechtach district .

Life

Hofmann was born as the son of the farmer Josef Hofmann and his wife Katharina, b. Buger, born. The day after his birth he was baptized Catholic in the church register in the church register. After primary school, he attended grammar school in Metten from 1906 , which he graduated from high school in 1915. He first moved to the St. Jakob seminary in Regensburg , but was drafted into military service as early as November 1915 during the fighting during the First World War , from which he did not return until January 1919. After three years of training as a priest, he was ordained a priest on June 29, 1922 in Regensburg Cathedral . He started his first job in July of the same year as a cooperator in Hohenfels . From January 1925 he worked as a cooperator in Perkam for three years . Then a serious illness forced a break. After his recovery, he quickly held the positions of cooperator in Bad Abbach and parish provisional officer in Appertshofen , Hausen and Martinsbuch . Finally, in February 1929, he was appointed as an expositus to Schönau, where he worked for over 37 years. After Hofmann was disabled as a result of a serious illness from 1944, he died after severe suffering on November 14, 1966 at the age of 71 and was buried three days later in the Schönau cemetery.

Scientific work

In addition to his pastoral work, Hofmann devoted himself to local history research into his closer home. In numerous offprints or as essays, works appeared in which he dealt with the ecclesiastical and secular history of the Upper Bavarian Forest . His most important writings on local history include research into the 600-year pilgrimage to Schönau, the development of the church and architectural history of the parish church of St. Augustine in Viechtach, as well as his treatise on the Nussberg knightly family .

He organized and registered all parish archives for the Catholic Church in the Viechtach deanery, for which he was made an honorary capital in 1962 as a thank you . For many years he served in the Viechtach district as a district home administrator and head of the district archive. In this function, a chronicle of the city of Viechtach was created. On the occasion of the handover of the new building of the Viechtach District Court on February 7, 1961, he wrote an extensive compilation of the judiciary in the city. As a district home keeper, he was a member of the Bavarian Forest Association and was there on the culture and press committee responsible, among other things, for the publication of the magazine Der Bayerwald , in which he himself published seven articles. In addition, Hofmann gained a reputation as a family and clan researcher that extended far beyond his official sphere of activity. .

The coat of arms of the district of Viechtach

When a coat of arms was to be designed for the Viechtach district at the beginning of the 1960s, Hofmann countered the draft of the General Directorate of the Bavarian State Archives with his own proposal. Hofmann referred to the history of the animal kingdom in various motifs . He adopted the spruce from the coat of arms of the eponymous city of Viechtach. To distinguish it from the city arms, he placed it on a mountain of three. It is taken from the coat of arms of the Niederaltaich monastery , which had a decisive influence on the historical development, especially in the Zellertal. The landmark of the district, the post , is symbolized by a heraldic post, here executed as a Bavarian diamond pattern . Finally, in the front of the coat of arms there is a pewter-crowned castle tower, which indicates the numerous castles around Viechtach. The coloring in the colors silver, blue, white and red refers to the noble family of the Degenbergs .

The Viechtach district council decided on April 10, 1961 in favor of Hofmann's draft, which was finally approved by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior on September 13, 1961.
