Giorgio I. (civil: Giorgio Carbone; * June 14, 1936 ; † November 25, 2009 ) was from 1963 to 2009 " Prince of Seborga ", a municipality in Liguria . As the elected prince, Giorgio I ruled his five square miles principality for 46 years.

Life

Carbone came from a family of florists and mimosa growers. He was the executive director of the local florist community. In the early 1960s he took part in historical studies, from which he concluded that Seborga was not placed under state power either at the Congress of Vienna or when the Italian Republic was founded in 1946.

In 1993 the residents of Seborga were so convinced of Carbone's arguments that they elected him prince for life with 304 votes to four against . Since then he has been SAS Giorgio I, Principe di Seborga . In 1994 he had Seborga's old currency, the Luigino , minted again and had his own stamps printed. He drafted a city coat of arms, issued a constitution, had a cabinet, and his army consisted of one person.

Italy did not recognize its principality, its citizens continued to pay taxes to the Italian state and participated in the Italian elections.

Carbone, who was not married, died in Seborga in 2009 without leaving a biological heir. His body was cremated in the crematorium in Nice , and his ashes were scattered in the sea.
