Luigino from 1666, minted in Tassarolo

The Luigino is a historical billon coin that was minted in northern Italy in the second half of the 17th century. Their appearance corresponded to the French 5 sou coins minted at the same time , with the image of the sovereign on the obverse and a crowned coat of arms with three lilies on the reverse. The value of the Luigino was equivalent to 8 Soldi .

Between 1994 and 1996 the Luigino was minted again as the currency of the internationally not recognized Principality of Seborga . The new Luiginio is divided into 100 centesimi and is equivalent to six US dollars . Since the Luiginio is only used in Seborga and parallel to the euro , it is in fact a currency made for collectors.
