The Bavarian State Archives in Munich is the largest Bavarian State Archives and due to the long existence as a state of Bavaria and one of the most important archives in Europe .

history

As a central archive, it includes files from the former duchy , the electorate and the kingdom as well as the present-day Free State of Bavaria. Documents (e.g. documents , files, maps and plans) of the administration of the authorities and institutions of Bavaria responsible for the entire national territory are kept from the beginning of the written form in the administration until today. The previous institution was the Royal Bavarian General Reich Archive , which was renamed the Bavarian Main State Archive in 1921. The Bavarian Hauptstaatsarchiv was up to its destruction in 1944 together with the Bavarian library in the 1843 finished Monumentalbau Ludwigstrasse 16 Wilhelm Winkler prevailed that the Hauptstaatsarchiv after the war in the building Arcisstraße 12, one of the so-called lead-built could be accommodated temporarily.

The current buildings of the Bavarian Main State Archives (former Bavarian War Ministry of Leo von Klenze ) are located (since 1978) in Schönfeldstrasse 5-11, a side street off Ludwigstrasse , in the immediate vicinity of the State Archives Munich , the Institute for Bavarian History and the Bavarian State Library .

Until 1971, the general directors of the Bavarian State Archives also ran the main state archive . Only since then has there been a separate director for this archive.

Stocks

The holdings of the Bavarian Main State Archives currently comprise over 3.5 million archive units with a volume of around 47,000 running meters (running meters). They include in detail:

  • for the period before 1800 283,000 documents (3,500 running meters), 600,000 files and volumes (12,700 running meters) and selections and collections of 25,000 maps and plans not recorded by meters as well as 220,000 reproductions of seals and coats of arms
  • for the period after 1800 5,300 documents (90 running meters), 1,460,000 files (27,800 running meters), 307,000 maps and plans, modern collections (posters, leaflets, photos, images, etc.) in the amount of 441,000 units (1,350 running meters) and archival materials in film form with 150,000 units.

The Bavarian Main State Archives are divided into the following departments

  • Section II Newer stocks from 1800
  • Dept. III Secret House Archive (Ludwigstrasse 14)
  • Section IV War Archives (Leonrodstrasse 57)
  • Dept. V Estates and Collections

The neighboring Munich State Archives are responsible for the former renters' offices in Munich and Burghausen and state central and sub-authorities as well as courts in the administrative region of Upper Bavaria .
