The Bavarian War Archive was founded in 1885 and is used to store documents and materials on Bavarian military history . Today it is part of the Bavarian Main State Archives as Section IV .

history

The basis of the archive is the so-called old stock , files that go back to the 17th century. These were stored in the Reich Archives from 1866. In 1885 the Bavarian War Archives was founded as an authority subordinate to the Bavarian General Staff . The main task of the archive was to create as complete a history of the Bavarian Army as possible . In 1920 it was subordinated to the Foreign Office , but in 1933 it came under the jurisdiction of Bavaria again and was then administered by the Bavarian State Chancellery . In 1937 it was renamed the Munich Army Archives and added to the German Army Archives . In 1946 the archive was finally connected to the Bavarian Main State Archive. 1949 took over the documents (v. A. Bavarian War muster rolls and leaderboards from the First World War) of the former branch Munich the central evidence Office warrior losses and war graves that after 1919 the armory was established in Lothstraße.

tasks

The original goal of publishing a history of the Bavarian Army was pursued until 1935. A total of eight volumes were published that deal with Bavarian war history up to 1914. A separate military history magazine was published between 1882 and 1925. From 1921 onwards, almost 100 war stories of Bavarian regiments were published in the series of memorial sheets for German regiments , as well as other publications on the history of the Bavarian army during the First World War. One of the main publications was the commemorative work of Bavaria's Golden Book of Honor , issued in 1928, which lists the bearers and the facts of the award of the highest Bavarian war awards of the First World War .

Today's task of the archive is to provide sources for research into military history. Due to the large inventory of collected materials from all areas, the war archive also serves many other research areas on Bavarian history.
