Memorial sheets of German regiments
Reminder sheets of German regiments is a series of books that was published after the end of World War I and into the 1940s. Each volume described the operational history of a regiment or independent battalion in World War II. A total of 1,250 volumes were published. The memorial sheets appeared in four regional parts with separate consecutive numbering for the Prussian , Bavarian , Saxon and Württemberg units. The latter regional series was titled The Württemberg regiments in the war .
Origin and content
The decisive role in the conception and direction of the series played George Soldan from the Reichsarchiv , who headed the Folk Writings Department there from 1919 . The volumes have the title affix According to official war diaries edited , which refers to the central support with archive materials by the Reichsarchiv - in particular the war diaries of the unit itself. The support by the Reichsarchiv was organized regionally, the main office ( German Reichsarchiv Potsdam ) looked after the Prussian series, the Bavarian War Archives in Munich supported the Bavarian series, and branches of the Reich Archives in Dresden and Stuttgart supported the Saxon and Württemberg series, respectively. Outside of the book series of memorial sheets of German regiments , but with a similar focus and with the support of the Reichsarchiv, the troop history series From Germany's Great Times appeared in Zeulenroda from 1929 .
The typical structure of a volume includes the formation or mobilization , the participation in battles 1914-18, the home march and whereabouts after the armistice , a list of commanders and the filling of positions with officers as well as lists of casualties. Sometimes the volumes also contain a history of the regiment from its founding to 1914, maps and photos, and more rarely complete lists of the crews. The volume of the volumes is often several hundred pages. There are almost never any footnotes or a bibliography.
The authors of the individual volumes were often on the front lines as officers or even commanders of the units described and were supported by the alumni associations of their regiments. In this respect, the volumes count as memory literature . These troop and regimental stories formed part of the culture of war veterans and were explicitly aimed at alumni and their families in the sense of honoring all regimental members and commemorating their fallen and wounded comrades. In these writings, military history is “equated with the history of war and operations”, the dark side of war was faded out and the events of the war were heroized. Regardless of this evaluation, the publications in the series are important as a secondary source for historical research, as the files from the Reichsarchiv processed in them were largely burned during the British air raid on Potsdam in 1945.
The volumes are also used by family researchers . On the one hand, the loss lists contained therein are mostly complete and often contain details about the place of death. On the other hand, the volumes of those who participated in the World War, of whom neither letters nor diaries have survived, offer the most detailed description of the specific missions, even if the handling of death and atrocities does not correspond to today's perspective.
