from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1st Jäger Battalion "König" was an association of the Bavarian Army .

history

The battalion was established on November 27, 1815 by King Maximilian I Joseph . It was formed on January 4, 1816 in Salzburg from the volunteer hunter battalions of the Regen , Unterdonau , Iller , Isar and Salzach districts, which were set up in December 1813 to form a reserve army in the interior of the kingdom . The garrison was initially in Straubing and the last place of peace before the outbreak of World War I was the Jäger barracks in Freising .

German war

The hunters were used during the war against Prussia in 1866 near Zella, Hammelburg and Helmstadt .

Franco-German War

In the war against France in 1870/71, the battalion took part in the battles at Beaumont , Sedan , Artenay , Orléans , Loigny and Poupry as well as the siege of Paris .

First World War

At the beginning of World War I, the battalion was part of the Cavalry Division ( 6th Army ), initially on the Western Front in Lorraine. During the attack on Ypres in October / November 1914, the battalion at Hollebeke and Zandvoorde proved its worth. In the spring battle of La Bassée and Arras on May 9, 1915, the battalion succeeded in counter-attacking the break-in of the XXII. Bring French Army Corps south of Souchez to a halt. Subsequently subordinated to the Alpine Corps as part of the 1st Jäger Regiment , the battalion fought against Italian forces on the Tre Sassi from June 1915 . During the Battle of Verdun , the battalion managed to penetrate the honeycomb trenches north of Fleury from June to August 1916 and to advance to the Fleuryhöhe. But the success could no longer be used because of the high losses and general exhaustion. After being moved to Romania in September 1916, the battalion fought successfully near Sibiu . At the end of the war it remained with the Alpine Corps and shared its fortunes.

Whereabouts

After the Compiègne armistice , the hunters returned home, where the battalion was demobilized and finally disbanded in mid-1919.

The tradition took over in the Reichswehr by decree of the Chief of the Army Command General of the Infantry Hans von Seeckt from August 24th, 1921 the 10th and 12th companies of the 19th (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment in Kempten .
