Location of the Vimy barracks in Bavaria |
The Vimy barracks is a former barracks in Freising .
history
The Prinz Arnulf barracks were built in the neo-baroque style between 1904 and 1906 as a replacement for the barracks in the former Neustift monastery . At the same time, the Freising water tower was built on the site . The 1st Royal Bavarian Jäger Battalion "König" was stationed there , hence the common name Jäger-Kaserne . It was previously housed in Neustift . In the 1930s, the barracks was expanded and renamed the Vimy Barracks, in memory of the at the Second Battle of Artois in the First World War fought heights of Vimy . After the Second World War , which the barracks survived without damage, American troops moved in. In May 1966, the barracks were handed over to the Bundeswehr . The location administration and the telecommunications regiment 31 of the Air Force and later the radar command department 24 were stationed here. After the end of the Cold War and the move to the General von Stein barracks , the Vimy barracks was closed in 1993. The site was sold to the city of Freising. Today there is a residential area with new buildings and the renovated and listed buildings of the barracks.
The barracks, which continue to exist in the form of the “Prinzregenten Park” condominium, are listed monuments and are listed in the Bavarian list of monuments under the file number D-1-78-124-296 . One building serves as the “house of associations” and, in addition to event rooms, also houses the Freising City Archives .
