The City Archives Freising (archive abbreviation StadtAFS ) is a scientific institution of the City of Freising . It keeps documents from the 14th century until today. It has existed in an institutionalized form since 1909. It is a public facility, is open to all citizens and offers a reference library with around 4500 volumes in a reading room.

The main task of the city archive is the order and security of the city's files - all documents of the city administration that are of cultural, historical or legal importance are stored here. But archives of non-urban origin are also kept, such as B. Personal bequests, company and club archives as well as extensive collections. It is also of importance for scientific research into the history of the city, the Diocese of Freising and the former Hochstift Freising .

history

Old town hall on Marienplatz, Wening 1681

The need to keep records for the long term also arose for the city of Freising with the institutionalization of community tasks in the late medieval period. A city seal is mentioned in 1330, 1334 there is the earliest reference to a city council. In 1389 a town clerk appears for the first time in a document. He was also responsible for the archive, which was then located in the old town hall on Marienplatz.

The municipal administrative competences were not very well developed until the transfer of the city of Freising to Bavaria in 1802/03, as the prince-bishop's central authorities regulated a great deal in the bishop's royal seat. Because of this, the volume of documents up to the loss of this residence city function was probably relatively low compared to other cities.

During the 19th century, the city archives were partly housed in the municipal administration building in (today's) Bahnhofsstraße. With the new town hall building in 1904/05, it returned to Marienplatz. In 1909, the first, still volunteer archivist, Friedrich Schul, began organizing the collections; this work was continued by his successors: Rudolf Birkner in the 1920s and Josef Scheuerl in the 1930s. In 1937 the archive got new, larger rooms in the so-called Stauberhaus, which is connected to the town hall to the north.

House of associations, seat of the city archive

Under the two post-war archivists Norbert Bodenstedt (1951–1988) and Wolfgang Grammel (1989–2012) there was an extensive takeover, organization and listing of the city's archives. It began to take over non-municipal archives, and from the 1950s the archival collections were built up, e.g. B. the map, the plan, the photo, the postcard or the manuscript collection.

Since 2003 the Freising City Archives have had their provisional location in the “House of Clubs”, a barracks building of the hunter barracks built in 1906 and now abandoned (from 1938 Vimy barracks ). It will remain in this listed building until a new building is completed in Fischergasse, east of the former prison .

Responsibilities

Contact point for city history

The city archive in the “House of Associations” not only stores documents, books and files of the city administration, but also actively collects documents related to Freising's history, for example photos, posters, postcards, business and association documents, commemorative publications, books, films and personal estates. The city archive is the central point of contact for all questions about the history of the city of Freising.

Task catalog of the municipality

The city archive has received an extensive and differentiated catalog of tasks from the city of Freising. As an independent, municipal office, the city archive also performs administrative tasks such as organizational, personnel, financial and budgetary matters that are not reserved for the other offices.

Archives holdings

Municipal archives

This includes the archivable documents of all administrative units of the city of Freising (Lord Mayor's staff, departments, offices, foundations, own businesses). The oldest part of the city's archives is made up of the documents, starting from the year 1361. The city's official registers go back to the early 16th century, but in the period before the mediatization in 1803 they have only survived selectively. Naturally, the largest space is taken up by the municipal files, the records of which, similar to the official registers from before 1803, are very sparse.

The archives of the places incorporated in the course of the 20th century also fall under the municipal archives: Neustift (1905); Voetting (1937); Haindlfing , Itzling , Sünzhausen , Tüntenhausen (1972); Attaching , Pulling (1978).

Non-urban archive material

The acquisition of archive material that was created outside the city administration, but with reference to Freising, did not begin until the second half of the 20th century. This essentially includes personal bequests as well as club, company and school archives. Among the personal estates, those of the tractor manufacturer Anton Schlüters and the architect Alois Steineckers deserve special mention.

Archival collections

The collection holdings of the Freising City Archives include: the document collection, the manuscript collection, the print collection, the map and plan collection, the photo collection, the postcard collection, the sound carrier collection, the film collection, the newspaper collection, the newspaper clipping collection, the guild book collection, the music collection, the graphic collection , the poster collection, the coin and medal collection, the stamp collection, the gift collection and the city history documentation with the biographical collection and the house index.

Reference library

The origins of the library of the city archive go back to the books held by the Freising city council. Numerous titles from the 18th and 19th centuries, in particular on local government and local law, give an indication of this to this day.

The library of the city archive currently contains around 5,400 titles. In addition to the Bavarian state history, the focus is primarily on the history of the city, the former monastery and the diocese of Freising and the archdiocese of Munich and Freising. The library is currently being cataloged; in the medium term, the titles will be available via a separate OPAC system. Since the library of the city archive is a reference library, it is not possible to borrow it.

Publications

The Freising City Archives have been active as a journalist since the mid-1990s. One example is the catalog published by Wolfgang Grammel for the exhibition of the same name “Freising - From the market to the city. On the history of the bourgeois town of Freising from the High Middle Ages to the 19th century ”. Until 2016, the Freising City Archives also worked on the editing of the regional history journal Amperland .

In 2015, two scientific series of the city archive were designed:

  • On the one hand there is the series of “Writings from the Freising City Archives”, the first volume of which will be published in November 2016 with the collection of articles on “Freising as 'City of Beer': Cultural and Historical Aspects”. This series serves to research the history of the city, diocesan and monastery of Freising.
  • The second row, the "Catalogs of the City Archives Freising", has the purpose of making the exhibitions of the City Archives comprehensible from a journalistic point of view. The first volume in this series with the title “Freising in the early days of photography. 60 recordings from the years 1860 to 1900 ”was published in July 2015 for the exhibition of the same name.

Others

The work of the Freising City Archives is supported by the Friends of the Freising City Archives Association. This was founded on July 29, 2015.
