Old prison (Freising)
The old prison is a historic building complex at Oberen Domberggasse 16 in the old town of Freising .
history
The prison in Freising was originally located on the ground floor of the old town hall. In 1663 the "Oswald-Huberische Haus" on the Moosach with the collapsed "Domstifts-Kaplaney" was bought by the Hochstift Freising and a "Eisenfrohnveste" was built on it, which served as a city and maintenance court. In the course of the child witch trials in Freising (a first trial took place between 1715 and 1717, a second between 1721 and 1723) the prison tower known as the “witch tower” was built. After the secularization of the Freising Monastery in 1802, the complex was used as a court building by the electoral-Bavarian administration. In 1840 a three-story cell structure and a six-meter-high enclosure wall were added. In 1881 the courthouse was rebuilt on Unteren Graben. The cell block of the old courthouse was still used as a court prison and was not closed until October 1, 1965. The building remained unused. In 1982 the extension on the east side was demolished.
Renovation and current use
The renovation of the building complex began in 2005 with the establishment of the Friends' Association of the Old Prison Freising eV. There is a wine bar on the ground floor and exhibition rooms are available on the upper floor. The prison museum is on the second floor.
In 2007, parts of the film Räuber Kneißl by Marcus H. Rosenmüller were shot here.
