The Moosach is an (originally) almost 50 km long left tributary of the Isar , which flows between Freising and Moosburg . However, it must also be counted as the right tributary of the Amper , as the Mühlbach, which splits off shortly before the mouth of the Isar, leads almost 30 percent of the water at Moosburg into the Amper. The mean annual discharge in Freising is just under 3 m³ / s. Places on their (original) run are Munich , Oberschleißheim , Unterschleißheim , Eching , Neufahrn , Freising and Marzling .

Source and course to Freising

The original source of the Moosach is located in the Munich district of Moosach and its old course is now called Feldmochinger Mühlbach . Today this flows into the Würm Canal in Munich- Feldmoching , which, together with the Isar - Garchinger Canal, supplies the canals in the Oberschleißheim Castle Park with water ( north Munich canal system ). This is also where the new origin of the Moosach is located, which is initially diverted as the Berglbach. This crosses Oberschleißheim in the east, then turns west and crosses under the Munich – Landshut railway line . In the north of Unterschleißheim it passes under the A 92 . At the latest here in Inhauser Moos , the water is called Moosach again. This runs parallel to the A 92 before it turns north at Neufahrn and crosses Massenhausen . The Moosach then flows through the Freisinger Moos to Freising .

Course in the city of Freising

In Freising, the Moosach runs in several arms. Coming from the west, the Stadtmoosach branches off below Weihenstephan , the only one that crosses the old town north of the Domberg . Until around 1880 this arm ran openly through Obere Hauptstrasse, after which it was covered there and a long square was created. For several years there have been discussions about whether this overburden should be reversed. Most of the rest of the arm is channeled.

The arm south of the Domberg divides into Wörthmoosach and the main arm. The Schleifermoosach branches off from the latter. The Wörthmoosach meets the main arm again at the level of Bahnhofstrasse. The Mohrenbrunnen and the Altöttinger Chapel are also located there . On the eastern edge of the city, the Stadtmoosach flows back into the main arm, while the Schleifermoosach only meets it in the Isar floodplains at Marzling .

In the western part of the city, the individual arms are connected by several weirs and short canals. Among other things, there is a direct derivation from the Stadtmoosach into the Schleifermoosach at the Karlwirtkreuzung in order to protect the old town from the floods of the Wippenhauser and Thalhauser trenches. In addition, the connections were used to regulate the water level of the numerous Freising mills.

In the Vötting area, the Moosach will in future be crossed under the Freising western bypass by the Vötting tunnel .

muzzle

For the last few kilometers, the river runs through the Isar floodplains, sometimes only separated from the Isar by a cycle path. Shortly before the mouth, the river branches out again at Oberhummel . The main arm flows into the Isar ( ) directly at the bridge between Oberhummel and Gaden , while the rest of the water flows as Mühlbach to Moosburg and flows into the Amper there.

pollution

In 2019 it became known that fish in the Moosach near Freising are contaminated with malachite green . Since the fish in the Moosach are also contaminated with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), the authorities warned against frequent consumption.
