Marienplatz (Freising)

The Marienplatz is the central square in the Freisinger Old Town . In the middle is the Marian column as the official survey point and official city center.
The square is traversed by the main road in the south and widens to the north, with the terrain rising slightly. The main street extends in the old town of Freising from the southwest to the northeast, in the middle is the Marienplatz and separates the main street into “Obere Hauptstrasse” (in the west) and “Untere Hauptstrasse” (in the east). Originally, the area between Marienplatz and today's Bahnhofstrasse was also called "Mittlere Hauptstrasse".
On May 22, 996, the Freising Bishop was granted market, coin and customs rights. The bishops therefore set up a place for the regular market, the Schranne. The weekly market is still held at Marienplatz today, Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except on public holidays). The original name of the square was "Schrannenplatz", around 1810 "Hauptplatz", today "Marienplatz".
