The former Prince-Bishop's Lyceum Freising was a church college with an attached grammar school in Freising that existed from 1695 to 1803 . The building complex in the middle of Freising's old town with the historic Asamaal has been preserved to this day.

history

The university and the attached grammar school were founded in 1695 by the Freising Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing and Liechteneck at Marienplatz . The Lyceum was looked after by the Benedictines . The building is a baroque four-wing building with a long street front, it was probably started around 1695 by Antonio Riva . The west wing dates from 1707 to 1709, the east wing from 1737. From 1764 the south wing was built. In the west wing is the Asamaal with ceiling paintings by Hans Georg Asam and stucco by Nikolaus Liechtenfurtner . The secularization of the Hochstift Freising in 1802 brought the end of this university. In 1834 a new, now Royal Bavarian Lyceum was built in Freising, which was renamed the Philosophical-Theological College Freising in 1923 , which existed until 1969, but its seat was in the former stables on the Domberg .

After secularization, it was initially used for various schools that used the Asamaal as a study church. From 1838 the appellate court had its seat here. This rebuilt the hall (insertion of a false ceiling and a transverse walls) and used the hall as a courtroom. From 1862 it was used by the secondary school as a gym. In 1949, the wall and the false ceiling were removed and the ceiling painting was renovated. The building wing is now owned by the city of Freising. The Asamaal used as the “Asamtheater” was completely renovated in 1975 and the west wing was extended by 7 meters over the Moosach in order to expand the stage area. The hall is also used for concerts, lectures and ceremonies. The main facade was renovated in 1977/78. The Freising City Museum has also been housed in the building since 1965.

The building will be fundamentally renovated between 2017 and probably 2020. The renovation is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art with 950,000 euros. During the renovation in mid-2020, a historic pump system was uncovered, which was previously only known from plans; pumps of this type are only known from northern German mining.
