From the Wolfenbüttel Agrimensors Codex

An agrimensor - also called mensor , mensor agrorum , finitor or gromaticus , German Gromatiker (to Groma ) - was a surveyor of the Roman Empire .

Authors who have written relevant works include Sextus Iulius Frontinus , Hyginus Gromaticus, and Siculus Flaccus . The Agrimensoren writings belong to the ancient specialist literature that was still used in the Middle Ages. The oldest surviving manuscript dates from the 6th century. Carolingian copies go back to lost late antique models and also reproduce the images of their originals. For a time, the texts of the Agrimensors may have belonged to late antique court literature, as can be seen from a depiction of the emperor in the Codex Palatinus Latinus 1564. This manuscript was probably copied from a copy from the 6th century in the first half of the 9th century in the circle of Ludwig the Pious in Lotharingia. The humanists Niccolò Niccoli and Johannes Sichardus showed interest in it.

Such manuscripts have since been compiled into the Corpus agrimensorum Romanorum and thus discussed in the history of mathematics .
