Marstall (Freising)
The Marstall on the Domberg in Freising was built as a court stable for the prince-bishops of the Hochstift Freising . Today the building houses the Freising Cathedral Library .
location
The Marstall is located on the south side of the cathedral courtyard, which is formed by the Freising Cathedral , the collegiate monastery of St. Johannes with the prince's passage , and the prince-bishop's residence . A belvedere from the Baroque period lies between the residence and the stables . To the south of the Marstall, the Domberg falls steeply towards the Moosach and Isar . An underground car park was built here, the roof of which is also used as a terrace.
history
The Marstall was built during the tenure of Albrecht Sigismund von Bayern . The first plans for a stables existed as early as 1668. The proposal by Giovanni Gaspare Zuccalli, who planned the horse stable on the ground floor and a ballroom on the upper floor, was not implemented. In 1670/71 the royal stables were finally built. In this design, too, the horse stable was on the ground floor, whereas the upper floor was used for the prince-bishop's picture gallery. The ballroom was eventually built in the residence.
With the end of the Freising Monastery in 1802, the building fell to the Bavarian State. The plan from 1825 to use the building as a depot for the Royal Bavarian General Reich Archives was not carried out . From 1834 the building was finally rebuilt and then used by the Lyceum (from 1923 Philosophical-Theological University of Freising ), the Dom-Gymnasium Freising and the Latin school. In order to cope with the increasing number of schoolchildren, the building was extended by a second floor in 1877/78. After the university was relocated to Munich in 1968 and a new building was built on Domberg for the Domgymnasium between 1975 and 1980, a new user had to be found for the building. The city of Freising intended to use the building for the technical college, but in 1980 shared that it was no longer interested in the building. In 1981 the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising finally acquired the Marstall. After extensive construction work, during which, among other things, the wooden ceilings were replaced with concrete ceilings for reasons of load-bearing capacity, the building was inaugurated on May 17, 1994. The ground floor is used today as an archive depot for parish archives and also for the archives of the archdiocese. The public areas and offices of the cathedral library in Freising are on the first floor, and the library's storage rooms are on the second floor .
