The Cathedral Library Freising on the Domberg in Freising is the central library of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and one of the largest church libraries in Germany.

history

The cathedral library in Freising was built by Bishop Arbeo in the 2nd half of the 8th century and at that time had an important scriptorium . Around 1448 a first larger library room was built on the upper floor of the chapter house on the cloister. The library hall, located in the same place in 1732, was created according to plans by Johann Lorenz Hirschstötter in the Baroque style by Thomas Glasl (a student of Johann Baptist Zimmermann ) and has remained largely unchanged to this day.

As part of the secularization in Bavaria in 1802/1803, the most valuable books were taken over by the Bavarian state and mostly brought to Munich. From 1826 onwards, the remains were given to the newly built clerical seminary of the archdiocese. In 1857 the cathedral library was elevated to the status of library for the archdiocese of Munich and Freising . Due to the existence of a study library at the nearby Philosophical-Theological University of Freising , the cathedral library led a rather shadowy existence .

From 1946 at least a new cataloging was started. The approximately 50,000 volumes of the Freising Philosophical-Theological University Library, which was dissolved in 1968, were handed over to the University of Augsburg shortly after it was founded in 1970 . In 1974 new rooms for the cathedral library were created in the diocesan museum, which were the main seat of the library until 1994. On May 17, 1994, Cardinal Friedrich Wetter inaugurated the converted stables and has been the library's headquarters ever since.

Since 2008, the Cathedral Library in Freising, together with the library of the Metropolitan Chapter in Munich, has formed the diocesan library of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.

Current situation

In the meantime the inventory has increased to over 322,000 volumes, including a. 345 manuscripts, 3,215 music manuscripts and 222 incunabula . Since 1994 the scientific library of the historical association Freising is located in the building of the cathedral library and is co-administered by this.

Since the beginning of April 2009, the baroque hall of the cathedral library has not been open to the public due to restoration work, as the valuable books have become moldy due to structural damage . The modern reading room is still open. In October 2009, a modern conservation workshop was set up in the baroque wing of the library to dry and clean the infected books.
