Arbeo from Freising
Arbeo von Freising , also Aribo von Freising or Arbo von Freising (* 723 or earlier near Meran ; † May 4, 784 ), was Bishop of Freising .
Arbeo is assigned to the ancient nobility of the Huosi or the early Aribones . He entered the Benedictine order and was educated at the Latin school. Presbyter and notary under the Freising Bishop Joseph von Verona , he became abbot of the newly founded Scharnitz monastery in 763 . In 764 he succeeded Joseph as Bishop of Freising. The monasteries of Innichen in Pustertal (769), Schäftlarn (762) and Schliersee in Upper Bavaria (779) were founded under his leadership . In 772, Bishop Arbeo moved the Scharnitz monastery to Schlehdorf am Kochelsee.
Arbeo, who is considered to be the first writer of German origin, is mentioned as the author of the Codex Abrogans . He is also the founder of the Cathedral Library in Freising and the author of Vita Corbiniani , a biography of the life and work of St. Korbinian , which provides valuable information on early Bavarian history beyond its biographical character.
Arbeo was buried in Freising . His feast day in the Catholic Church is May 4th. In Freising, Aribostraße is named after him.
