Anianus (Wilparting)

Saint Anianus (* 6th century or 7th century; † November 15, 697 in Irschenberg (uncertain)) was a Christian deacon and missionary in the 7th century.

According to legend, Anianus and his uncle Marinus were of noble Irish Scottish descent. In Rome Marinus to Pope Eugene I. to bishop to be ordained and Anianus a deacon. Together, the two Christianized the in today's later Miesbach in Upper Bavaria located Tegernsee valley where they lived as a hermit than 40 years. According to legend, Marinus was murdered by vandals . After learning of Marinus' martyrdom , Anianus is said to have died a miraculous death on the same day.

The pilgrimage church of Wilparting near Irschenberg is dedicated to both St. Marinus and St. Anianus.

The male given names Anian and Anjan are derived from the name Anianus . Several saints bear the name Anianus, which in Christian tradition goes back to Anianus of Alexandria . The female first name Anja, on the other hand, does not come from Anianus, but is a Russian pet form of Anna .
